Pumpkins: MIA

So the big news yesterday was this: We could be facing a potentially Thanksgiving-table-crippling canned pumpkin shortage. My mom called to tell me about it, ironically after I gave her one of my cans of pumpkin on Wednesday night because "I had an extra can". If I had only known.

I started to calculate in my head if I have enough canned pumpkin to last me until the shortage is over. (FYI, I've found I'm very easily swayed by the threat of scarcity, especially when it comes to food.) I checked my garage and counted 4 cans. 1 can will be used for this year's pies, and I'll probably need at least one can for the Christmas pies as well. Then there's the fact that my homemade pumpkin tarts are an easy and crowd pleasing dessert that I love to whip together at a moment's notice. Then there's the fact that I've been craving Bobby Flay's southwestern spicy pumpkin soup. It's just not enough.

The cynical side of me thinks that maybe it's all hype. Maybe they just want us to rush out and buy their pumpkin. Could they be that devious? It could be part of a winter squash conspiracy. Am I willing to gamble on that? Not a chance. I'm heading to Sam's Club this morning (open early for business members) to stock up on 2 three packs of pumpkin. And some Hazelnut Piroulines while I'm at it, because what if they run out of those as well? You just can't be too safe.

There's an Eggo Waffle shortage as well, although I seem to be less worried about that for some reason... ; )

Oh, and I just read that it's just Nestle that has the shortage-- there are other brands that shipped even more than usual this year. So, it looks like you'll be okay. For pumpkin, that is. You're out of luck with the Eggo's. ; )

Sadly, I found out today that the nice 3 pack of canned pumpkin previously available at both Costco and Sam's Club are now sold out and will not be restocked until next year. If I want more pumpkin, I may have to pay full price, or just make do with the cans in my food storage.

Mike says they have pumpkin at Harmon's. He just saw it last night-- a whole end cap.

I also heard that about the pumpkin... however, I have been converted to roasting my own pumpkin and making pies, custard, whatever, out of it! It tastes better, and I don't feel so bad for feeding Bri bowlful after bowlful. the girl can't get enough!

And to make matters worse, there's some kind of fad diet that requires eating one can on pumpkin per day. We had a terrible time finding any in Sept and Oct, before the "shortage." I think I have 3 cans that'll get me through Thanksgiving!

I just saw a ton of pumpkin at Target, too. On sale, I think.

I bought 6 cans today at Harmons, 3( cans for $5). That gives me 10 cans total, which I think should be enough. Crisis averted.
